Key Takeaways:

From the Appalachian ridgeline to the California coast, this country has roads built for motorcycles – and the five routes here are worth planning a real trip around.

These aren’t “top ten” list filler. They’re roads that riders actually organize their lives around.

Check seasonal closures before committing – a few of these routes are inaccessible for months at a time.

Get on a motorcycle, and the road becomes something you’ll never find in a car. The temperature change through a canyon, the sound of the engine in an open stretch, the way your whole body reads the road – none of that survives a windshield. America was practically built for two wheels. Not many countries hand you desert, coastline, mountains, and flatland. All rideable, all connected by pavement.

Read: The Secret to a Family Vacation Everyone Actually Enjoys

Go-To Routes You Must Ride

Here are some of the top routes chosen by actual riders.

Blue Ridge Parkway: 469 Miles, No Trucks, No Traffic Lights

Blue Ridge Parkway starts in Shenandoah, Virginia, and runs 469 miles south to the edge of the Smokies in North Carolina – designed from the start to keep commercial traffic out. No commercial trucks. Minimal traffic lights. Curves, ridge-line views, and long, quiet stretches where the road is yours alone.

Fall is the move, late September into early October. Peak color, manageable temps, and the light at elevation is something worth seeing.

Tail of the Dragon: 318 Turns at Deal’s Gap

Deal’s Gap sits right on the NC-Tennessee line. US-129 through there is one of those roads that comes up in conversation years after you’ve ridden it. Eleven miles. Three hundred and eighteen curves. They don’t come with breathing room. Tight, technical, relentless. At one point, the curves come faster than you can anticipate them.

Hit it early on a weekend if you can. It draws a crowd, and for good reason – this is one of the most photographed roads in the country. The surrounding Cherokee National Forest’s beauty is on par with popular national parks, and it has plenty more excellent two-lane roads to explore once you’ve gotten the main route out of your system. The Dragon gets under your skin. Plan accordingly.

Pacific Coast Highway: Running Highway 1 from LA North

Whatever you’ve heard about Highway 1, it’s true. From the cliffs above Big Sur, to the fog coming off the Pacific, to the way the road clings to the hillside hundreds of feet above the water, it’s about as cinematic as a road gets. On a bike, you’re getting the full experience, with salt air, Pacific temps, and every smell and sound that a car seals out.

LA to San Francisco is around 400 miles of mostly two-lane. It’ll feel longer than that because you’ll stop. A lot. That’s not a problem because stopping is the point of this one.

Route 66: Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier, Eight States

Nearly 2,400 miles of it. Eight states. Chicago to the Santa Monica pier, through towns and terrain that look like nowhere else, places you can pull over and feel the history.

The original road still runs in pieces, with diners and motels and roadside setups that haven’t changed much since the ‘50s. Nobody’s taking Route 66 because it’s efficient. That’s entirely the point. Modern American culture traces back here, to the Mother Road.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: Glacier National Park at 6,600 Feet

It goes through Glacier National Park and crests above 6,600 feet, featuring the kind of scenery that still surprises you even after you’ve seen all the pictures. Glacial lakes, waterfalls, peaks with snow on them in July, wildlife close enough to stop traffic; it’s a must-go for riders who are outdoor enthusiasts. The road itself is narrow in sections and carved directly into the mountainside, which is not ideal for wide touring setups with big saddlebags. Prepare before you go.

The season is short. Typically mid-June through mid-October, weather depending.

Before You Roll: A Few Things Worth Knowing

A few things apply no matter which one you go after:

Mountain routes: Going-to-the-Sun, parts of the Blue Ridge – close in winter and into spring. Check current status before you book.

Pack for temperature swings: Elevation changes fast, and so does the weather in mountain terrain.

Give yourself more time than the mileage implies. The best rides on this list reward riders who aren’t rushing.

Know your machine: High elevation and big mileage days ask more of a bike than regular rides.

Experience These Routes

Any one of these routes is worth a dedicated trip. Some are wild and treacherous routes, while some can be so serene and peaceful at times that all those who do them hear is the sound of their own motorcycle exhausts. The riders who’ve done them come back with stories. Figure out which one fits your season and your setup. Then stop planning and go. The others will be there.

Budgets may come in handy to take off financial stress while on vacation.

Complete tasks early to avoid exhaustion before the trip.

Ease up and allow your kids to enjoy a bit more screen time.

Truth be told, getting up every single day to go out and earn a living is one tiresome task. The constant hustle and bustle, meetings, deadlines, and more are definitely not easy. Therefore, when you do save up some cash for a vacation, it is only right for you to enjoy it, especially when you are with your family.

Well, here are a few tips that, if well implemented, can help make your trip nothing but worthwhile.

Travel Within Your Budget

According to a study published on Bankrate in 2025, around 29% of Americans planned to go into debt so that they could have a summer holiday/getaway.

These are astonishing stats as vacations are not spaces where one needs to blow their finances or spend money that they set aside for vital goals. For that reason, it is necessary to come up with a well-thought-out budget that factors in all essentials.

Additionally, you also need to take into account that extra expenses may come up in the different places you may visit. You might be walking around the street, and your kids wish to grab a bite from a beautiful restaurant along the way. There is no harm in trying something new or out of the plan. However, as you do so, ensure that the space does not just cater to your experience but also fits your budget.

The whole point here is to ensure that everything is in check and you are not constantly worrying about finances. This is because if you keep stressing about money, there is a huge chance you will not enjoy any part of the trip.

Read: Red Rocks Shuttle: Easy Transportation from Denver to Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Factor in Your Kids

It is okay for you and your partner to wake up one fine morning and decide to go for a holiday on a mountain slope and explore. When kids come into the picture, sometimes such expeditions may not be quite favourable for them.

That is why when planning for a family vacation, you need to factor in everyone, including your kids, to ensure that the trip is enjoyable for all.

Be on the lookout for hotels and resorts that come with water slides, polo, and a bunch of games and activities that are suitable for young ones. With this, as they enjoy the splashes, mom and dad could be on the poolside beds basking in the sun. See! Everyone Wins!

Avoid Being Exhausted Before the Trip

Nobody wishes to be in a situation where they are sipping their favourite coconut drink on an island, and all they can think about is the undone chores at home. Even so, the idea of coming home from a lovely family vacation to a house that is untidy/unclean is really unpleasant.

For this reason, many prefer to do the cleaning before getting on the road. Now the trick is to have a proper schedule of different chores around the house. Start the process a few days/week before and complete the chores over time. This is better than spending the last days exhausting and sweating over laundry duties in the middle of the night.

With your affairs in order and proper rest as you lead up to the trip, you are bound to have an enjoyable vacation.

Loosen Up and Let the Kids Have Some Fun

On vacation, you may want to relax, feel the breeze, and enjoy the calming silence as the waves wash up the shore.

See, getting to this point would be quite difficult if your kids are unhappy, nagging, and constantly crying.

From the beginning of the journey, you could ease up a bit on a few things that soothe their hearts. Some examples include;

Screen Time

It is common for parents to have stringent rules at home on the use of smart devices by their kids.

However, it would not hurt if you let them use the kids’ tablets/phones a little longer than usual. As they are preoccupied with their favourite animations or cartoons, they are less likely to cause “trouble.” With this, your vacation gets off to a beautiful start.

Time and Foods

Loosening up can also extend to other items. You can push their bedtime a bit more as they take up things they love to do or as you continue to play and bond with them.

Foods can also be included in this space. You can share more treats like cakes and ice cream just to make them a tad happier.

Also, to be fair, a huge chunk of those rules is designed for the home. You are now probably in a resort, so let things flow.

NOTE: Easing up on rules does not necessarily mean a complete eradication. So as you do so, you can always impose limits (extended) and monitor everything closely.

An Enjoyable Experience For All

The whole point of vacations is often to fulfill your heart’s desires and have the time of your life. This becomes even more meaningful when you are spending time with the people you love and care about, especially when sharing the experience in a family vacation villa. For that reason, it is important to keep in mind several things so that you do just that. From budgeting to avoiding stress-related issues, to considering your kids in your plans, and more. All of these are integral in curating an enjoyable vacation for you and your family.

There are few better places to explore as a family than Hawaii. And one of the best ways to go about it is to have a road trip. Traveling by road gives you a chance to really look around the islands and absorb everything Hawaii has to offer.

So, if you’re all set to imbibe the aloha spirit, here’s a quick guide to help you plan your family road trip in the Paradise of the Pacific!

Pick an Island

Strictly speaking, you don’t need to pick any one island. All of them are excellent spots to holiday with their own family-friendly attractions and activities. Choosing any one is simply a way to allow you to avoid island-hopping and all of the ensuing packing and unpacking that involves.

1. Oahu

Oahu is well-known for the number of family-friendly resorts and hotels it has, where you’ll easily find accommodation for your entire group. One of its best-known attractions is Waikiki Beach, just on the outskirts of Honolulu. You can go souvenir shopping, learn to surf, or enjoy one of the many amazing restaurants nearby.

Oahu is also a relatively small island. With Honolulu as your home base, you could easily tour a bunch of nearby spots, including Waimea Valley, Laniakea Beach, and one of the many hiking trails the island has to offer.

2. Maui

Maui is a fantastic place to enjoy nature and experience the outside world. There are opportunities for snorkelling and whale-watching. While underwater, you could admire the beautiful coral reefs and the colorful sea life. You can also do the latter at the Maui Ocean Center, which happens to be the largest living tropical reef aquarium in the West.

In general, Maui has some excellent beaches, including the striking black sand beaches at Wai’anapanapa State Park. Other interesting spots on the island include Haleakalā National Park and the picturesque road to Hana. The latter is a must if you’re road-tripping in Hawaii.

3. Big Island

The Big Island, or the Island of Hawaii, is the biggest in the Aloha State. It’s a pretty diverse place as well. It has everything from huge snow-capped mountains like Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa to abundant rainforests along the Kīlauea Volcano and Hāmākua Coast.

If you’re looking to do a really long, immersive road trip, this is the island for you. In fact, you could even arrive at and depart from different sides of the island, considering that one-way car rental agreements are fairly common there. Explore attractions like Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, Hilo Farmers’ Market, Nahuku Lava Tube, Kailua-Kona in the west, and more.

4. Kauai

Kauai is often a favorite for repeat visitors to Hawaii. It boasts incredible landscapes with imposing mountains, beautiful waterfalls, crystal-clear waters, and plenty of fun family activities to do. It can also feel a little more untouched and less touristy than perhaps some of the other islands.

Check out the Na Pali Coast and the amazing sights it offers. Consider going on a boat cruise while you’re there to appreciate Kauai at leisure. Much of Kauai is unreachable by land, but some of the few places that are include the Limahuli Garden & Preserve, Hanakapiai Beach, Hanakapiai Falls, and Hanalei Bay for the amazing sunsets.

Car Rental Tips

1. Book Your Rental Online

Car rentals in Hawaii can get expensive depending on which agency you use — certainly more so than on the mainland. Booking online allows you to check out several providers and benefit from a number of online discounts on offer. You should also book as far in advance as possible, as the rates may increase in response to demand.

2. Be Smart About the Car You Choose

You’ll want something with enough space for you, your kids, and all the essential gear you plan on bringing with you. You could choose an SUV or, better yet, a 4×4 if you plan on an excursion such as to the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

3. Beware of Extra Expenses

Providers may often try to saddle you with unnecessary expenses, such as booking fees, prepayments, high refueling rates, and more. Choose a rental company that is flexible and willing to work with you to improve your road trip experience.

4. Choose Your Insurance Wisely

While on your trip, you’ll want to remain protected against accidents. car break-ins, and the like. It’s a good idea to be insured, but you don’t necessarily have to accept the first offer made by your rental car company. You may want to check with the insurance agent for your personal vehicles and see if you’re covered. Your credit card company may also have some offers for you to choose from.

Hawaii is hands-down one of the best vacation spots for families. And a road trip is one of the best ways to go about it. It lets you travel at your own pace and really immerse yourself in the local culture. Make sure you research your car rental companies. Whether you’re looking for a jeep rental on Oahu, an SUV on the Big Island, or a more compact car for a smaller group, you can find it with the right provider.
